Lizzie Miller, senior administrative assistant to Drs. George Georgiou and Adam Heller, received the 2017 Ruth Crawford Staff Excellence Award at the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering Annual Holiday Banquet, on Friday, Dec. 15.

The annual award recognizes excellent staff contributions and is named after former senior staff member Ruth Crawford, who devoted 30 years of exemplary service to the department working for Professor Emeritus John J. McKetta Jr. The award recipient is selected by a committee that includes one faculty member, one graduate student, and the previous year’s winner. Nominations are requested from faculty, staff and students. The previous year’s recipient is not eligible for the award.

“Lizzie has to be one of the hardest working administrators that I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. She is kept extremely busy by the day-to-day maintenance required to keep a large lab functioning efficiently,” says one nominator. “At the same time, she will drop whatever she is doing and immediately assist those with problems by answering questions, providing paperwork, scanning documents and sending you to the appropriate place. She does this without complaint and can always be counted on to cheer you up.”

Lizzie has worked for the department since February 2007, when she started as a part-time administrative assistant. Since that time, she has been an asset to the department and the university as a whole. Lizzie was instrumental in the advancement of the campus-wide Association of Research Administrators, aimed at ensuring professional and efficient grants and contracts administration at the university. Her initiative and commitment to the department led her to win a Texas ChE Staff Spotlight Award in June of 2017.

“Lizzie supports one of the largest research groups in the department. Despite her busy schedule she is always ready to cast an experienced eye over a colleague’s problem,” said another nominator. “She plays an active role in supporting university research administrators beyond her own group and was one of the first people to join the UT Association of Research Administrators. In taking the initiative to become a Certified Research Administrator, Lizzie is showing us all the way.”
