Texas ChE Senior Wins Texas Exes President’s Leadership Award
Texas ChE senior Jade Jackson was recently selected to receive the Texas Exes President’s Leadership Award. The annual award recognizes undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership within the student community at UT Austin.
Jackson is pursuing a dual-major in chemical engineering and chemistry, along with a minor in African and African diaspora studies. After her expected graduation in May 2017, Jackson will move to Philadelphia to begin a position with Accenture.
Jackson’s involvement with engineering organizations is extensive. As the current president of the National Society of Black Engineers, Jackson has worked with the Cockrell School of Engineering to create a more inclusive and diverse environment for faculty and students. She works as a PI tutor and FIG mentor for the Equal Opportunity in Engineering Program to positively impact the experiences of first and second year students.
Jackson was formerly and orientation advisor, a peer advisor and student assistant for Engineering Student Services and the Texas ChE undergraduate office, head counselor for the My Introduction to Engineering summer enrichment program, and the assistant project manager for the 2014 Nicaragua Project for Under-served Communities team.
One of her proudest achievements is her work with Texas BWiSE (Black Women in Science and Engineering) where she strives to create a strong network of students and mentors to improve the experiences of Black women in STEM.
Jackson was nominated by Ana Dison, the assistant director of the Woman in Engineering Program, and will be honored during an award ceremony, May 8 at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center.
