AIChE Hosts Special Symposium in Honor of Dr. Nicholas Peppas
The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) will host a special symposium in honor of Texas ChE Professor Nicholas Peppas’ 40 years in academia during the 2016 AIChE Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California this November.
Sponsored by AIChE’s Food, Pharmaceutical & Bioengineering and the Materials Divisions, the symposium entitled “40 Years of Impact at the Frontiers of Science and Engineering” invites talks by Peppas’ former students, colleagues and friends over the course of a day-long symposium.
“We hope this event will bring together many of the individuals that have been greatly impacted by Nicholas,” said Dr. Zach Hilt, Texas ChE alumnus and former Ph.D. student of Peppas. “It will be a time for recognition and celebration as we look forward to his future impacts.”
The event is co-chaired by Hilt, as well as Peppas’ colleagues Anthony Lowman, dean of the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering at Rowan University, and Ali Khademhosseini, professor at Harvard Medical School. Symposium speakers include leading minds in tissue engineering, polymer and materials science, regenerative engineering, drug and vaccine delivery, smart therapeutics, data-driven modeling and more. The event will conclude with a presentation from Peppas himself.
“Nicholas has inspired a generation of biomaterials scientists,” Dr. Khademhosseini said. “We want to celebrate his great accomplishments and inspiration for the young generation.”
During his 40-year career, Peppas has gained recognition from a plethora of leading engineering organizations. Most recently, he was selected for an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, the School of Chemical Engineering of the National Technical University in Athens, Greece; appointed to the National Materials and Manufacturing Board; received a courtesy appointment in the Dell Medical School’s Department of Surgery and Perioperative Care; received the 2016 Pritzker Award from the Biomedical Engineering Society and is listed as “one of the most cited researchers in the world.”
“Dr. Peppas has instilled his high standards of scholarship to me and my students,” said Dr. Tony Mikos, former Ph.D. student of Peppas during his tenure at Purdue University. “I admire his drive, his boldness in research and his ability to build and lead interdisciplinary teams to attack problems of global importance.”
Peppas holds membership in numerous organizations of many disciplines including the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Inventors, the French, Spanish and Greek Academies, the Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Sciences of Texas, and more.
