Assistant/Associate Professors (two positions) – Chemical and Paper Engineering

POSITION: The Department of Chemical and Paper Engineering (CPE) invites applications for two faculty positions at the rank of assistant or associate professor to start in the fall of 2012. Duties and responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; develop and maintain an independent high quality research program; enhance curriculum; advise students; supervise undergraduate senior design projects, independent studies and graduate thesis research; participate in departmental, divisional, university and professional service activities. Requirements: Ph.D. in bioengineering, chemical engineering or closely related field of engineering. PhD candidates will be considered, but the doctorate must be completed by the time of appointment. Appointment as associate professor requires a proven track record in research, scholarship, teaching and service. The department anticipates filling two positions. For both positions, candidates should possess expertise in biomaterials, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, bio and/or chemical processes, or systems biology. Exceptional candidates with expertise in any field of chemical engineering will be considered. DEPARTMENT: Established in 1957, CPE currently has 8 full-time faculty, administrative and technical support staff, 250 undergraduate majors, and 10 MS graduate students. The department offers ABET accredited, undergraduate majors in chemical engineering and interdisciplinary majors in bioengineering and engineering management. Many opportunities for undergraduate research, student co-op, and study abroad are supported by the department. The graduate program offers advanced courses and requires students to complete a research thesis. The Miami University Paper Science and Engineering Foundation is a non-profit organization that solicits and coordinates industry support for scholarships, equipment, and curricular advice. It operates independently of the department and is led by an executive director. The department’s laboratories include modern research laboratories, a highly instrumented pilot paper machine, a unit operations laboratory, biochemical engineering, bioengineering, materials testing laboratory, and other laboratories containing bench scale process equipment. The hired faculty will have access to the facilities at the Electron Microscopy Facility (EMF) and Center for Nanotechnology. EMF is an all-University research, teaching and service facility located in Pearson Hall on Miami University’s main campus and is free access for the Miami University faculty. The EMF houses two scanning electron microscopes, two transmission electron microscopes, two laser scanning confocal microscopes, a multimode light microscopy system and a stereoscopic microscopy system. Both SEM’s are equipped with an energy-dispersive x-ray microanalysis systems (EDX) and EBSD capabilities. The Nanotechnology Center at Miami University have instruments of BET surface area, Fluorescence spectroscopy, Photoluminescence, X-ray diffractionmeter (XRD), FT-Raman, Mass Spectrometer, Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP-MS), FT-IR Microscope, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Atomic Absorption Spectrometer.

SCHOOL: CPE is administratively located in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS), which includes other related majors in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, General Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Software Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer and Information Technology, and Nursing. Miami’s undergraduate engineering program is ranked 21 in the category of “Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs where the highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s,” according to the U.S. News & World Report 2012 edition of America’s Best Colleges.
