Funding

Graduate student Meghali Chopra with Dr. Roger BonnecazeWe offer a competitive funding package including stipend, tuition, fees, and health insurance with our admissions offers to suitable candidates, including international candidates. Our students do not typically require additional loans or financial aid and prospective students do not to complete a separate application for funding. Funding is in the form of a Graduate Research Assistantship, unless a fellowship can be awarded. All of our students are also nominated for any available university fellowships automatically upon admittance.

Graduate Research Assistantships

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs) are typically appointed full-time, and funded through faculty research projects sponsored by government or industry. GRA appointees receive employee health insurance benefits. Tuition and fees are paid by their supervising faculty members.  The stipend amount for continuing students is reviewed by the faculty each year.

Fellowships

Students are encouraged to apply for competitive outside fellowships with training and advice from staff and faculty. Students in the department have been very successful in their applications for National Science Foundation and National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships, as an example. Fellowship holders are eligible for student health insurance through Academic Health Plans, and any shortcomings in tuition or stipend funding from prestigious fellowships will typically be supplemented by the supervisor.

In addition to outside fellowships, there are also fellowships for qualified students from the Cockrell School of Engineering and the Graduate School. These fellowships range from $1,000 to $9,000 add-ons, all the way to full stipend and tuition support. Faculty supervisors nominate students for these awards annually.
